A Family Owned Small Business
Blue Earth Compost was started in 2013 in West Hartford by Susannah Castle. Shortly after, she passed the business on to the Williams Family and it's been in their careful stewardship ever since. In 2017, the business formally moved to the City of Hartford and in 2020, long-time employee, Sam King, became a part-owner.

Focused on the Environment
We were founded on a simple premise; that food scraps do not belong in a landfill or incinerator. Instead, they should be turned back into soil and continue their life cycle by becoming compost. In this way, we can regenerate our soil, tackle climate change and make a healthier world. Got scraps? Make soil!

Our Mission
Our mission is to change the way that people think about "waste". To this end, Blue Earth Compost was created to expand the accessibility of composting to homes, businesses, and events in Connecticut and beyond. In the process, Blue Earth Compost will be a force for positive change by improving our environment, creating good green jobs, engaging with our community, and by advocating for social and environmental issues.

Food is the #1 Item in Landfills
By most estimates, Americans throw out 40% of the food that we grow. This is a colossal waste. Not only do we lose the food that we throw away, but also the water, fuel, and hard work used to grow it. Blue Earth Compost is committed to diverting as much food as possible towards composting and supporting organizations that encourage source reduction and food donation.

Conscientious Operators
Our commitment to the environment informs how we operate. We strive to pursue zero waste in our operations and minimize the use of fossil fuels through efficient routing and electric vehicles. We have a goal of being zero emissions by 2030. Half of our supply chain comes from within 100 miles and we use non-toxic cleaning agents to sanitize our containers.

Good Green Jobs for Connecticut
We believe that that which is good for the environment is also good for the economy. Blue Earth Compost is committed to paying a living wage to its employees as well as providing career opportunities to individuals that face barriers to employment, such as those that have been previously incarcerated.

Benefit Corporations
Blue Earth Compost is a certified Benefit Corporation (or B Corp). B Corps are held to a triple bottom line, meaning that they must analyze how their businesses perform socially and environmentally as well as financially. B Corps must walk the walk of corporate responsibility.

Partnering with Our Community
Blue Earth Compost engages with the communities that it serves by partnering with schools, non-profits, activist organizations, and church groups. With these groups we provide recycling education as well as donations in the form of compost deliveries for community gardens and financial contributions.

Putting Our Customers First
Businesses only exist to duly serve the needs of their customers. We go out of our way to provide the best possible customer service we can. Because of this we've gained a stellar reputation for reliability and service.
